Greens have a plan to build more homes and bring costs down, protect renters and end homelessness by building deeply affordable non-market housing. We can’t afford to wait. We need housing now.
Greens' plan:
- Build 2 million homes by allowing the construction of fourplexes and four storey buildings as of right across the province and sixplexes in cities over 500,000, and midrise buildings of up to 6-11 storeys on transit corridors and main streets.
- Removing development charges on homes, condos and apartment units under 2,000 square feet that are built within urban boundaries, and creating an Affordable Communities Fund to cover municipalities’ housing infrastructure costs.
- Removing the Land Transfer Tax for first-time homebuyers.
- Implement a multiple property speculation tax on those who purchase more than two houses or condo units in Ontario.
- Work with nonprofits to build 250,000 new affordable non profit and co-op homes and 60,000 permanent supportive homes with guaranteed funding for mental health, addictions and other supports.
- Reinstate rent controls on all units to regulate rental increases year-to-year and implement vacancy control to limit rent increases between tenancies.
- Place a moratorium on above guideline rent increases (AGIs) and create a Rental Task Force to look into the overuse of above-guideline rent increases.
